GRAFFITI 2014 Editors' Letter

Time ticked lightning-fast as you know it seemed like everything just paid a sudden encounter in the brisk blink of an eye. The moment we came in as little tedious boys, we were still slow on the path to hold the grand 100^th year celebration.

But now, after a normal flip of our eyelids, our sights were enriched by the puzzles of emerald green and bright yellow of the morning sunshine – numerous flags printed with the 100^th year celebration logo were hung aloft around the school compound, and that was when we had the idea of making our theme ‘EC 100 Years’.

An act to captivate you, our long complicated 100-year history had been nicely simplified and led to an enthralling timeline puzzle of pictures and tales. Have you ever wondered how EC was back in the old days? Well, we wouldn’t know too. So that’s why we searched for quite a number of articles written decades ago to show the standard of English years ago and hoping some of the authors of the articles who were ex-EC to reminisce about their days here.

Well notably, there’s a bit of a twist to our annual Festival Of Arts (F.O.A), which was originally a performing competition among the admirably talented students. But this year, it has evolved to a concert-based showcase of talents. Impressive performances by professionals and non-professionals will undoubtedly leave you speechless.

And yet last but not least, wouldn’t it be mind-boggling if you can’t find art from an art-promoting society? So this year, we are adding in pages of selected breath-taking artworks done by students from as many secondary schools as we are able to approach.

Students may scarcely have any feeling for the History textbooks, but we’re sure that this mind-blowing issue of Graffiti that blends in historical and modern elements can definitely appeal to your starving taste buds. Enjoy! ;-)

I am Euan Thum. This is my story.

No one is born a leader, but no one is born to stay shy and quiet forever too. I was a timid and unconfident boy who grew to celebrate individuality. I discovered my passion in poetry in high school and I never stopped exploring what I can create. I co-founded a society in college to share the love for poetry and had organised poetry recitals to help others discover its beauty. My poems have now been featured in several international publications and journals. During the global pandemic, I released two poetry collections for charity, which have raised more than RM1k combined! Working With Passion

I've long worked behind the lens. When I started experimenting with photography almost a decade ago, I was heavily criticised for the wrong angles, the misfocused subjects, and my pointless artistry. I tried and tried without proper equipment or professional guidance, but the determination to validate my photography skills had kept me going against the currents of criticism. In the midst of helping others 'capture a moment', as I would call it, I saw myself starting to request for similar photos to be taken for me, in hopes of keeping memories of my own in photographs. One person told me once, 'You're kinda like a model'. That was about 4 years ago, when I had finished high school for a couple of months. My hair was flowing a little freer than before and I had more time on my hands to run around Johor Bahru with my friends, looking for adventures and photoshoots.
