A Lovely Surprise

Today is the 31st of August 2012, which is also our fifty-fifth National Day. I had a lovely surprise when I went for shopping in a nearby Giant Hypermarket today.   It was a huge coffee-flavoured cake colourful fresh cream icing on it in the shape of the Jalur Gemilang flag on display. The cake was pretty eyes-catching as a result of being placed at the entrance of Giant Hypermarket. We even got a chance to have a piece of the cake.     Two employees from the hypermarket painted their faces showing a part of the Jalur Gemilang each making a complete Jalur Gemilang when they stood together side by side. My mum and brother even took a picture with them and the attractive cake as a memorable souvenir.       Although I didn't get a chance to watch the National Day Parade in Kuala Lumpur to day, I still felt so happy as I got a small but lovely surprise. The piece of cake that I got was really delicious. Thank you, Giant!   ...

Call Me Maybe

The Canadian rising star, Carly Rae Jepsen, had become the next Canadian superstar after Justin Bieber. The 26-year-old singer might have thrown a beautiful wish in the wishing well, but the success of her song, Call Me Maybe had made her more famous than she could ever imagine in her wildest dreams.   Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe is one of the singles of her second album, Kiss , which will be released next month. The song has an extremely pop genre which will make you dance and it lyrically tells us about a girl who has a crush on her hunky neighbour.     Call Me Maybe was written by Carly Rae Jepsen herself, Josh Ramsay and Tavish Crowe. The lyric is pretty awesome as the chorus of the song is a four-lined poem with five syllables each, which is:  Hey I just met you      And this is crazy     But here's my number      So call me, maybe?     The song becomes worldwi...

When Malaysian Food And Western Food Fuse

Okay, now we need a scenario about food, so picture this: When Malaysian food fuses with Western food, what will you get?   Well, I don't know. But you may find your answer at Malay Village Restaurant, which is located at Nusa Bestari, Johor Bahru. It may look normal for you but still, don't judge a thing by its appearance. You will always get surprises when you walk into it.   This restaurant is designed as the view of a Malay traditional village. Attractive decorations and stylish tables and chairs are all set in the restaurant. You sure can enjoy the scrumptious food, in the cool breeze from the air-conditioners without fighting for spaces with other customers there.   This is a restaurant serving delicious food, which are mostly the combination of the three main races of Malaysia, which are Malay, Chinese and Indian, with the essence of Western countries. Like the picture below, it shows a plate of Italian spaghetti with big slices of Chinese-styled roasted...

Valentine's Again

It was the 7th day of the 7th month of the Chinese Calender yesterday, which was as known as the Chinese Valentine's Day. In Chinese, we call it as 七夕节 (Qī Xī Jié). Japan has this festival too, and it was named たなばた ( Tanabata ) there.   It has a reason to have this festival. There was a story, a touching story about a young man who fell in love with a gorgeous fairy who saved his life. They lived happily in a village for a few years after they married. The man worked so hard in the paddy field while the fairy knitted cloths for sale to earn a living. Even though their life was tough, they felt happy anyway.   But on a scorching hot day, the Jade Emperor appeared at the couple's house. He was there along with the heaven guards to arrest the fairy as she had broken the heavenly rules to marry a mortal man. The man didn't want to lose his beloved wife so he told the Jade Emperor the whole truth that the fairy saved his life and that's how they fell in love.   ...

Cards Of All Time

When I was young, I loved to play cards.Uno, poker, they were what I used to play. But, Yu-Gi-Oh is always my favourite even though I'm now at the age of thirteen.   The Yu-Gi-Oh cards are the creation of Kazuki Takahashi, a Japanese man who is 41 years old now. He created the cards about a decade ago and he sold them at a shop. Soon, it became the fanciest game of the citizens of Japan and the charisma of the cards was strong enough to let the cards being exported and sold oversea.   The original Yu-Gi-Oh cards are in the language of Japanese. But nowadays, people had translated them into many language like Chinese, English and many more. However, only the ones in Japanese are valuable because the others are pirated. So now that you know how to differentiate  pirated cards, then please, stop buying them.   My brother, Sean started his collection of powerful Yu-Gi-Oh cards a few years ago. His card album really did its job well to keep the cards ni...

Dinner In The Breeze

When the time reaches 7:00p.m, all of us know one thing: It's dinner time.   Do you know, eating dinner has its precious knowledge and secrets too. Western people usually have steaks or stews for dinner while Eastern people prefer to eat rice or noodles. This is because the cultures of eating from the countries in this world are different.   I'm a Chinese from Malaysia. My family and I have Chinese food for dinner almost every day at home. But yesterday night, it was a little different as we had delicious Western food for dinner at Sky Deck Restaurant, which is located at the tenth floor of Pariss Hotel, in Nusa Bestari, Johor Bahru.     The restaurant is different from others because half of the restaurant which is on the topmost floor of the hotel is purposely built without roof over it. Therefore, it is open to the sky. Slight breeze in the evening air has blown the heat away, so it was rather cool up there. The restaurant, being built at the highe...

Raya Amat Ria

The time had come. Yesterday was the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and today's the second day.   First of all, I would like to say: "Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri" to all Muslim citizens in Malaysia. I believed that you guys had a terrible time of fasting last month as it was your Ramadan month. But now, the time had pass and all of you are enjoying in the joy of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.   Yes, I'm a Buddhist, not a Muslimah. But thanks to my "One Malaysia" patriotic spirit, I do celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali with my friends, but just not as merry as Chinese New Year.   I went to an open house party held by our Johor Chief Minister, Tuan Haji Abdulghani. It was held at his official residence, which was huge, luxurious and attractive with a lot of beautiful flowers being planted around its garden. Many people were there for the chance to shake the Johor Chief Minister's hand.   After that, we went for our lunch below the...

Food Fair In Singapore

I went to a food fair yesterday, which was being held in Singapore for three days. Yesterday was the second day of the event.   The food fair was held in a exhibition hall at level four of Suntec City Convention Centre. The hall was big and many stalls were set up there by hawkers from all around the world to sell their authentic food. The food was so scrumptious as you can see the room was crowded with people enjoying their meals there.   You didn't have to pay for tickets but you have to buy the food inside. The various types of food were so delicious and the prices were really relatively cheap. I bought a mini Chinese dumpling, which was only for one Singapore dollar, and it tasted so nice that I couln't forget the taste until now.     The Chinese dumpling was just one of the many types food from China. They got Shark's Fin Soup and Chili Crab too. Other than we could find Okonomi-yaki and Takoyaki from Japan, Chicken Rice Balls and Pen...

The Chinese Ghost Festival

Tick tock, tick tock. This is a clock. It was the night of the last day of 6th month of the Chinese calender, and it was 11:59p.m. Tick tock, tick tock. It had reached 12:00 mid-night. The date had changed and it was the 1st day of the 7th month, which was also the first day the Chinese Ghost month.   Yesterday was the first day of the ghost month. According to the Chinese legend, the gates of hell would be open on this very day for a month. Every spook is allowed to leave place where they had been tortured for the various crimes they had committed when they were still alive.   During this month, we're all advised by the elders to be more careful when we're outside. We should avoid picking up or stepping on things like prayer stuffs or beautiful hair accessories or jewelries and so on. They believed that spooks, or maybe some kind of ghosts, would take refuge in these things. And if you really do so, you may make them upset and they may follow you home, scare y...

日本の友人

My Raya holiday had started yesterday but I still had to go to my school, English College. today. For what? For taking part in the activity with a group of Japanese students from Anochyo Junior High held by my Japanese teacher, Azah Sensei.   I drizzled quietly this morning while the breeze was getting stronger and stronger. The sky was dark and looked so scary. We waited at the front door for their arrival. And soon, they'd arrived.     After their arrival, I was paired with a 12-year-old boy named Narumi to be his partner by my teacher we headed straight to the Mini Auditorium of my school. Both of us greeted and introduced ourselves to each other during the "journey" to our destination.   The programmes started with speeches by teachers student representatives. The teachers in charge of Anochyo Junior High, Sakki Sensei and my teacher, as well as the student representatives from each school gave us their speeches which were short but concise...

Sweet And Stylish As Swift

Sweet with a stylish scent, country turns to pop. I would like to talk about my idol, Taylor Swift this time. She's my idol since I'm 8 'cause her songs are always so nice and gripping.   Released 3 albums and had more than 20 million copies of her albums sold worldwide in just seven years is not easy, but Taylor had made it. She started her career when she was just 16 years old .7 years of hard work had given her wealth, fame and a gorgeous look.   Taylor had a nice, sweet element in her style of clothing with the curly blond hair at the beginning of her career. But nowadays, she seemed to be more stylish and fashionable as she stood out in a white sleek dress with fairly gold accents and cutouts at the 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards. The dress did make her look pretty and I just couldn't move my sight from the picture.   Taylor has plenty of must-see looks in her musics video such as Love Story , You Belong With Me , Teardrops On My Guitar and ...

Olympics, See You In Brazil

The 2012 London Olympics ended at 4am, early in the hazy morning of 13 August (Malaysia Time). I was always excited about the games, although my country, Malaysia, had only gotten a silver and a bronze medal this year, thanks to Dato' Lee Chong Wei and Pandelela Rinong respectively.   After 4 years of the Beijing Olympic Games in the year 2008, we got the London Olympics this year and it had ended on the 12th of August, which was yesterday. The medals list was led by United States, which had beaten China with the result of 45 gold medals to China's 38 gold medals.   Malaysia had only win six medals in the history of Olympics. The first one was a bronze medal in the year of 1992, a silver medal and a bronze medal in 1996, a silver medal in 2008 and we got two medals this year. Our country had won five medals in badminton events including this year, and diving, is the second event to win a medals in Olympics.   Dato' Lee Chong Wei, had win two sil...

Bleeding Love

They were once our favourite onscreen/off screen couple. They were once who owned the best kiss in movies. They were once our favourite actor and actress. But now, it all went upside down!!!   The Twilight Saga main characters Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were once our favourite onscreen/off screen lovers. But now, everything seemed to be over as Kristen, 22 years old this year, had a fling with Rupert Sanders, the director of Snow White And The Huntsman , who has been married for 10 years to his wife.   Newspapers and magazines were all talking about this news. A lot of people including Taylor Lautner, the Twilight star, were feeling disappointed of Kristen while Robert had moved away from their luxurious bungalow in Los Angeles, United States and avoided talking to her.   The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 is the last movie of The Twilight Saga . Its producer is releasing the movie in November this year. Fans from all around the worl...

Starry, Starry Night

Left. Right. Left. Right. Yeah, correct. Here and here and here. You might have guessed, I'm folding something. But what am I folding? Paper cranes? No, I'm folding paper stars.   We called folding papers as Origami in Japanese. It can be folding paper cranes, paper fish or maybe some kinds of flowers and so on. I do have a particular fondness of Origami, especially at folding paper strips into stars.   I started folding paper stars about seven to eight years ago, when I was just 5. It's my favourite pastime till now as it is really fun. You can control your emotion as well as your mind easily while folding paper stars.     A paper star equals to a blessing. The paper strips were printed in different colours and patterns to show a different meaning, like red means love, green means friendship and many more. Some words such as 'Friends Forever' or 'I Love You' were printed on the paper strips to show the meanings more obviously.   Nowadays, many ...

EXAMS!!! Or Maybe, PBS?!

Oh no! Exams! Many students' greatest fear is examinations, so is mine. An exam is a test to see how much you know about a subject or what you can do about something. Most exams have challenging questions and that's why we hate exams.   I, Euan Thum, just thirteen years old this year, but I have to take more than ten subjects in school. It's a bit difficult for me to truly understand what the contents of my textbook are in Bahasa Malaysia. But for other subjects that are in the language of English and Chinese, of course they're much easier for me.   Exams, who invented you? Many people think like that and you might have guessed, me too. I don't really like exams. It's true, I study to be clever and knowledgeable, not to score in my exams.   This year onwards, Form 1 students will not be taking the PMR exam. The government had declared that we would have a new examination system which would be replacing the PMR exam with a new examination called Pentaf...

The Sad Moment

Our country, Malaysia, has not gotten a gold medal in the Olympics yet. Dato' Lee Wei was our hope to get the first gold medal, but he only managed to win a silver medal.   Dato' Lee Chong Wei, 29, a Malaysian badminton player, won his second silver medal in the Olympics Badminton Men's Singles Final. His target was to win Malaysia's first Olympic gold medal but he couldn't reach it as his nemesis, Lin Dan, the Chinese player, blast out his real talent and on the match.   Dato' Lee Chong Wei lost to Lin Dan with the result of 15-21, 21-10 an 21-19. Everyone felt sad for him. But it's not his fault, at least he tried he tried his best. So people, don't ever blame him for your holiday and ice-cream.   As for our Badminton Men's Doubles, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong had lost to the players from South Korea.   Now, let's turn the scene to diving. Pandelela Rinong, our Princess Of Diving, got the 8th place and 7th place in her first...

T.G.I.F. At Nippon Yataimura

T.G.I.F. Thank God Is Friday. I do like to have fun on Fridays; but yesterday's much special.   A fancy desire for the taste of sushi brought me out to Inner City in City Square, Johor Bahru. My expectations were pretty high as the result of it being rated as a high-class restaurant. Hence, my family and I visited Nippon Yataimura. The merchant: Nippon Yataimura Lot MF-19, Level 3, Johor Bahru City Square, 106- 108, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, 80000, Johor Bahru, Johor.   Located near Plaza Seni and the CIQ complex, the City Square is one of the most visited shopping malls in Johor Bahru. It was rather hard to find this restaurant as there are many shops up there. However, we managed to find it in the lower level of Inner City.   The founders seemed to be a favouring spacious interior, they generously let their customers enjoy the appetising food without fighting for spaces, in the gleam of romantic strawberry pink. Seems like it's a nice place for co...

Money Buys Adele A Makeover

If you like Set Fire To The Rain , Rolling In The Deep or Someone Like You , I think I know who your idol is. Who is it? Adele Adkins is the one.   Adele started her achievements in 2006, when she was just 18 years old. She was a bit plump at that time, with two bright eyes, cutie cheeks and long bronze hair. Now, Adele is 24 years old. Her albums, 19 , had sold for five million copies while 21 , had sold for more than thirteen million copies.   We can see big differences between Adele's old look and the new one through the picture. She's much healthier and prettier now. Compare to her first appearance at the Grammy Awards, she looks extremely gorgeous in the magic of false eyelashes and highlights this year.   The Rumour Has It singer seemed to be undergoing an image transformation. She's now thinner as she had sheded 7kgs, with the help of a vegetarian diet. She had ditched cigarettes and meat and filled up her free time with joggings and exercises too. ...
