[EPISTLE 01 2016]- LDDS EC ~ INTERACT SSI

A pen-pal programme was commenced by the Literary, Drama & Debating Society of English College Johor Bahru, in collaboration with the Interact Club of SMK Sultan Ismail, as a token of friendship and a pursue in the rise of the quality in English writing. The programme involved 12 volunteered students from each school, in which the paired couple exchanged pseudonymously handwritten letters twice as the one-month plan went.
  The word 'EPISTLE*' was selected as an embodiment of the programme, in which we penned letters and laid our thoughts in handwritten forms instead of other tedious methods such as speaking and typing using electronic devices.
*According to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/epistle , the word EPISTLE holds several meanings:
1. A letter, especially a formal one.
2. A literary composition in the form of a letter.
3. Epistle Bible
     a. One of the letters included as a book in the New Testament.
     b. An excerpt from one of these letters, read as part of a religious service.



  Come to think, why make texting, phoning or sending e-mails our only choices to communicate, to deliver a message or to make our opinions heard? Well... because we're living in a technology-advanced era? Despite having the public presumption of being old-fashioned and lame, the Literary, Drama & Debating Society as an art-promoting society boldly call the composition of handwritten letters TIMELESS and we hope to promote the act through this EPISTLE programme.

  Within the one-month period, the 24 eager participants got to compose twice in English, with the programme being an effective medium to provide a boost to their confidence in the use of the language as well as to expand their social circles.


  The first batch of letters compiled by the students from English College were delivered to the President of Interact Club SSI, Gabriel Wong (left) , on 8/3/2016, Tuesday. All participants from SSI even received a copy of the LDDS-published bulletin, Graffiti 2015, as a souvenir of immense appreciation in getting themselves involved.

Working With Passion

I've long worked behind the lens. When I started experimenting with photography almost a decade ago, I was heavily criticised for the wrong angles, the misfocused subjects, and my pointless artistry. I tried and tried without proper equipment or professional guidance, but the determination to validate my photography skills had kept me going against the currents of criticism. In the midst of helping others 'capture a moment', as I would call it, I saw myself starting to request for similar photos to be taken for me, in hopes of keeping memories of my own in photographs.
