Gone are the days when doctors, toddlers and even Santa Claus advocate the merits of smoking. There seem no denial that these characters stand at a high position on the people's favourite list and would simply gain trust from them. However, as the Malaysian Health Ministry has recently set a few more non-smoking areas throughout the nation, the public is once again prompted to look into the seriousness of the negative effects caused by tobacco.
It is surprising that many people fail to notice that the prices of cigarettes only seem affordable in a day-to-day basis. In fact, tobacco smoking affects smokers economically in a long term. If a smoker adds up the expenditure on tobacco in his entire life, the results would be simply soul-executing to bring forward the curse of poverty. There is a saying from the Internet: A puff of smoke burns away a sparkling gold coin; A forest of cigarettes burns away a golden coast that shines. Let's say if you smoke 2 packets of cigarettes which cost you about RM20 per day, for 50 years, you would have spent RM20X 50X 365= RM365,000! That's enough money to get yourself a lavish trip around the globe.
Curiosity is the nature of mankind, a strong desire to understand the things that happen around us. As teenagers' young and inexperienced minds have not fully matured yet, what they do is mostly the imitation of their parents' actions. To those who are exposed to cigarettes at a young age, smoking seems to be nothing foreign to them. And naturally with their curiosity drastically aroused, they pick up a cigarette and step onto the journey which will destroy their lives.
Some teenagers even look upon smoking as a channel to relieve stress. High expectations from parents in both the aspects of studies and curricular activities might pressure and force them to take the shortcut method to remove the mental burden. They do not realise that the chemicals contained in a tobacco are just feeding them with a false sense or satisfaction and security; numbing them from the problems they face for only a short period of time. This in turn leads to the production of a new generation of smokers in our society.
Hence, the government should take the initiative to build up a stronger mindset in the younger generation to judge smoking as a total nuisance. The effort can be reinforced by adding the knowledge on why smoking highlights the word 'fatal' into the students' Science syllables in school. All teenagers should be aware of the dire illness of our respiratory systems which tobacco can bring with its acidic nature. On the list are the traumatic lung cancer, bronchitis and asthma, all with the unwanted effects which may shorten your lifespan.
Doctors, whom people bury their trusts in, should be appointed in more campaigns to remind smokers about the negative effects tobacco can bring despite the urge for nicotine can be gratefully relieved. Awareness should also be drilled into their minds that their foul breaths are hardly an act of showing respect to the people in the surroundings. Who would feel carefree in an environment with the infuriating smells of burning chemicals?
Long before Ronald Reagan became the 40th President of the United States of America, he was an actor. Like many celebrities in the '40s and '50s, he endorsed cigarettes. It was his habit to smoke 3 packets of Chesterfields a day and he was even contracted to do commercial advertisements for the branded company. He was indeed an influential public figure whom people paid immense admiration to back then, but as he smoked, many of his fans followed up because they thought what their idol did was right.
This situation proves that celebrities such as Jack Wilshere, Barack Obama and Lana Del Rey should not be icons of smoking which might allow their followers to move on the same track. It would be so much appreciated if they play their parts as proper role models who lead their fans to a positive lifestyle with a victorious mindset.
Ronald Reagan quit smoking after his brother's death due to lung cancer, which was reportedly caused by second-hand smoke from cigarettes smokers. Say, do you wish risking your loved ones' health just for your own indulgence? Prevention is always better than cure; stop smoking for the sake of your life as well those of your family members'. You would never want to witness them suffering from smoking related ailments. Yet, smoking is not a sin. It is never too late even if you have already been dealing with tobacco for more than a few decades. Just quit smoking now and make the world a better place for everybody.
